Reflect in a Google doc: - What do you think the message of the experiment is? - Would you be willing to be wait? - If not for a marshmallow, what would you be willing to wait for? What would this experiment look like if it were on teenagers instead of toddlers? - What differences do you notice between the kids who wait and the ones who can't? c. Submit warm-up to Assignment Dropbox d. Discuss. 3. Brainstorming and Planning for Author Autobiography. Use brainstorming organizer handed out in class. Due by the end of class. Today we will continue to open up the author autobiography project. 1. Attendance and announcements. 2. Author Autobiography - Look at the two student examples and on separate piece of paper note two observations and one question 3. Personal Values List a) On same paper, list your personal values. Include at least five. b) Number your values on a scale of 1-5, 1 being the most important and 5 being the least c) For each value, note one person or memory that stands out as significant to shaping that value. Turn in two observations and a question/personal values list to me. You will get this back on Friday when we begin brainstorming for the project. Homework: Think about what your three experiences might be and how you want to write them. Aloha and Happy Monday, 9th graders! Today in class students will be introduced to their quarter 1 project, the author autobiography. You will need one Google document to complete classwork. 1. Attendance and Announcements 2. Pictures Quote Warm-Up a) I will share four quotes with you. In your Google doc, reflect on each quote you see. Your thoughts may take the form of single words, questions you have, drawings, hashtags, etc. b) Tying it all together: what similarities/differences to these quotes share? What kind of message do all of the quotes communicate together? 3. Journaling: In the same Google document, journal your thoughts about how the quotes tie together. Please answer the following questions: - What similarities/differences to these quotes share? - What kind of message do all of the quotes communicate together? - What experiences have shaped your own perceptions and knowledge? - What experiences have shaped your personal values. Name Stories Part 2 1. Share: With a partner, take turns sharing your name stories. As you listen, be sure to take notes and write down the key themes of your partner's story. 2. Share again: Let's circle up and take turns sharing our partner's name story. As we go around the room, each student will share a few favorite parts of their partner's story. Please format your contribution in this way: - Partner's full name. - Meaning of partner's name. - 1-2 interesting things about partner's name story (i.e., something funny, inspiring, sad, historical, etc) 3. Reflect: In the same Google doc as your name story, reflect on this activity: - One thing you learned about yourself or others from writing your name story. - One thing that surprised you about yourself or peers when sharing your name story or hearing others' name stories. - Why does it matter that we know about our own name stories? - What is the value in knowing the name stories of our friends? All of today's work may be completed on the same Google doc. Part 1: Monday 1. Warm-Up: Freewrite about your name. What stories do you know about your name? Why did your parents name you what they did? Do you know what your name means? Do you like your name? Do people ever mispronounce your name? 2. Watch: ShaCondria Sibley - "To All the Little Black Girls With Big Names" 3. Write: Your name story. Feel free to to do a little research first. Look up the meanings of the your first, middle and last name. Think about all the stories your parents have told you about your name. Think about your own connection to your name. Some things to think about as you organize your story: a) What does your name mean? (First, middle, and last) You may Google the meaning if you’re unsure. b) What nationality is your last name tied to? What stories do you know about your last name? c) Why did your parents give you your first/middle name? d) What makes your name unique? e) Do you like your name? Why or why not? f) Do you have any nicknames? g) Is there anyone else with your name according to Google? What are they like? Your name story should be 3-5 paragraphs.
