The Queen's Prayer
The Queen's Prayer was written by Queen Liliuokalani when she was under house arrest in Iolani Palace in 1895. She dedicated this song to Princess Ka'iulani.
a) Listen to the song and read the lyrics here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQ2l1icqTRk
b) JOURNAL.
Queen Lili'uokalani lost everything after the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy-- her kingdom, her
crown, her residence, her belongings, her status in society, even her name and reputation, were slandered by the media and her opposition. However, she notes in chapter 29 that she wants her people to know they
“should continue to work for justice, but with aloha. It's our essence, like fragrance is to a flower. Aloha isour spirit. It's who we are. If we don't have that, we're lost, and there is no more Hawaii.”
Later in chapter 32, she tells Laura, 17 years later, that “If we feel hate and resentment, everything turns cold and dark. But we have to choose to give aloha, and the power that vanished is restored... something new can grow. We have not lost our kingdom. The door is [in our hearts]. Aloha.” Lili'uokalani is able to hold on to the essential ideas of her culture in order to make it through this whole ordeal with dignity. She does not react with violence or revenge, because that would go against aloha.
For your journal entry, choose ONE of the following prompts:
- What is something you are willing to surrender everything for? Maybe it is an idea you grew up with, or
perhaps a person that is meaningful to you? What are you willing to lay down all of your selfishness,
pride, and personal desires for?
- What humbles you? For Queen Lili'uokalani, it was the spirit of aloha—a key concept of her culture. Describe a time when you felt humility-- what happened? Be specific and thoughtful.
- Write about a time when you were called to forgive someone or something. What happened and were you able to truly let go and forgive? How was this challenging (or not)? How did you feel after choosing to forgive?
Craft your response in a Google doc and submit to the Assignment Dropbox. Journals will be graded on thoughtfulness.
